I have a couple of questions now that the festival has moved to the new site... (Sorry if you have answered them already, I can't find the answers)
With the new site:
1) Do we have a bit more room per person to camp? I bought this fantastic 10x13 tent and based on the old space "rules" i would be off by 3 feet on one side.... Please don't make me have to buy a new tent, I love my tent-mahal!
2) Cooking: Can we now cook in our own areas?
3) Water: Will there be pottable water available? Drink-safe too?
4) Is there an updated camper's rules list available?
Thanks so much :) Can't wait to get on the road, Canada is COLD and I am looking forward to some nice hot weather!

Re: New Site Questions
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 11:23 AMI think the space size is the same, but I'm betting you can find some folks to camp near that wouldn't mind you overlapping into their spot. Can't speak for anyone, but it seems like a logical friendly assumption. Campers with more people have more space, but they might not need it all.
No, the camping cook spaces will still be centralized due to extreme dry grass conditions.
There will be water available to fill water jugs and such. I think you'll have to go off site for an ice run, but other folks will be doing the same so I'm sure you can coordinate with someone.
Ready for some heat? Man, oh man, you can HAVE it! We've had a week of 100 degree temps and I'm ready for cooler weather again, please! -

yes the tent size is fine, we do have more wiggle room now :) -

Re: New Site Questions
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 12:21 AMI've posted a site map in the Tribe's picture gallery - this should help answer questions about where camping will be.
We've got four different camping zones:
- RV camp
- Party Camp for those who like to stay up late jammin
- Family Camp for those who don't
- Totally Quiet Camp for those who want to sleep in for the morning hours and don't want the kids in the next tent to wake up at 6 AM and start running around 10 feet from your pillows...
There will be showers, and there will be potable water.
There will be campstove cooking ONLY in the designated cooking area (because it's on a concrete pad - the rest of the site is on tinder-dry grass!)

Re: New Site Questions
Sun, July 26, 2009 - 1:20 PMHi Again, a couple more questions, sorry :)
1) Can we swim in the Lake that is onsite?
2) I think a continental breakfast is included in the All-weekend passes right? What is in your continental breaky?
Thanks :)

Re: New Site Questions
Mon, July 27, 2009 - 5:10 PMThere's kind of a marshy cow-trampled pond, surrounded by blackberry bushes, in between the two camping areas.
Needless to say, NOBODY will be doing anything remotely like swimming in it... :)

Re: New Site Questions
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 3:47 AMGlassbar has long been a spot for clothing-optional swimming closer in to Eugene. But I wish, frankly, that people WOULDN'T go there, & that a link about it had not been posted
Main reason, is because both the area, & parking for it simply cannot support an huge influx of people at once. And a big reason cops don't bother anyone to cover up, is because while it's an open secret among locals who enjoy skinnydipping, it's not well-known or frequented by people outside the area, or many people who have lived here for yrs, come to think of it.
Used to be known for having a few unsavory types around, but t's not nearly as sketchy as it used to be, & nowhere near the exaggerated rep. some folks who are uncomfortable w/ nudity have made it out to be. It is a longish-walk in, which hopefully will discourage many people.
There are many, many places all over this area where people can spread out, & w/ a little effort, find great places to swim, suits or not. Better not to crowd one area to smithereens- which has had a very negative effect on Cougar, BTW. If you go, please understand there's a charge now, & please leave any glass & pets in the car. And please, whatever you do, don't pee right in or right by the hotsprings!
Don't wanna be a grouch, just wanna protect this beautiful area.

Re: New Site Questions
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 4:31 PMAbout 4), there are slightly modified camping rules and regs posted on Faerieworlds.com. Actually it's a link to a PDF file you can download . Enter www.faerieworlds.com/camping2009.pdf in your browser and that'll set up the download. Foxit Reader or Adobe Reader will allow you to view it and print out.
If you printed out the rules before the site change was announced, the major changes are that RV, bus and van camping is now possible, plus item #9 about noise was changed, but it's mostly rewording. The other big change, which doesn't exactly appear in the rules, is that there will be an area for late night revelers, a quiet with kids zone and a quiet with no kids zone.

Wed, July 22, 2009 - 10:13 PMIm thinking that the wine of years past was the Secret House Winery wine. Not sure if there's gonna be booze sold at this one. -

Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 4:41 PMI love Honeywoods wine from Salem OR, they vended there 2 years ago! It was like drinking sweet Necture! -
-
Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 5:15 PMLOL thats ironic you mention honeywood.
I stopped in there to grab a bottle of blackberry mead the other day. (YUM) and talked to the folks there for a bit and dropped off some flyers. From the sound of things they are not going to be vending this year.
But if your driving down from the north maybe stopping in to grab some would be a great idea.
I could grab some bottles for folks if I had a means of getting fundage for it.

Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 6:02 PMI think I had some of that blackberry mead last Saturday at Canterbury Renaissance Faire. It was just a taste, and I wished I still had some money to get some. I believe I'll have to stop by their shop either tomorrow if I go back to the Faire. It's $12 per bottle according to their website. Oh wow, was it ever good! -
-
Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 6:31 PMYeah it is! And yes 12 bucks in the winery shop too. Which is here in Salem off of 12th street and misson. maps.google.com/maps
They have so many flavors of fruit wine its all to die for.
Blueberry, cherry (one of my faves), strawberry, mead, and so forth. All just wonderful! -
-
Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 8:31 PMGood to know the price is the same in the shop. I just wish I'd known about this a couple of weeks earlier. I went looking for mead and found Whole Foods carries it, but the price was $13.98. I bought a couple of bottles.
Back in Massachusetts around 1990, I worked part time as a tour guide at Nashoba Valley Winery, a fruit winery that made many varieties of apple wine and also things like blueberry wine (wonderful), raspberry (to die for), strawberry rhubarb (far better than I would've thought) and peach (marvelous). Several times I helped out on bottling runs. At the end of a run, there would be several cases of what they called bottling loss, when the level of wine in the tank was low enough that there was a risk of sediment getting into the bottles. I'd usually end up with at least a case of wine to take home from those times, which I considered excellent pay even considering they gave a 50% discount to employees. They didn't do mead, so it wasn't until I moved out here that I first had some. -

Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 9:31 PMSounds like one helluva deal! Honeywood has one of the better meads I've had. -

Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 10:03 PMI believe it! One sip last Saturday and I was completely sold on it. Now, I don't know for certain the mead I had then was from Honeywood, but it was definitely a blackberry mead, and the ren faire was on the West side of Silverton, so it seems very likely. It was being sold at $5 for a cup which looked like about 4 ounces, so it was a definite money-maker for the faire.

Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 6:35 PMMobyD! If you do go back, is it possible you could pick me up a bottle and I will pay you at FW?
I owe someone dear a bottle... we opened the one she bought at FW in 2004 to celebrate an event in my life that eventually turned into a nightmare...
I'd love to have a bottle of that heaven to give back to her!
I'd just order off the website but I don't use credit cards or have a bank account (I'm "stealth"... but sometimes that means I have to acquire things in round about ways!) plus it'd be a great story that the new bottle came from this years fest!
:) -
-
Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 8:22 PMAsh, sure, I could pick up a bottle for you. Right now I'm undecided whether to go tomorrow or on my way down Thursday morning, but I'll do one or the other and have it. I'll be camping in the Quiet/no kids area. I'm sure we can figure out some way to hook up at some point.

Re: New Site Questions - Honeywood Mead
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 8:06 PMI went back to the Canterbury Ren Faire in Silverton today. One of the first things I did was stop by the ale house and ask about the mead. Turns out it was indeed the Honeywood Winery's blackberry mead. Later on I stopped by for a cup. This time it was only $4, same price as the beer they were also selling.
It was every bit as wonderful as last week's sip had promised! I took my time drinking and savoring it.
It was a hot day, so after seeing some of the performers and the knights in action, I left early and headed over to Salem and the winery. I went south on I-5 to Exit 253 and headed NW on Mission St. I hadn't printed out a map, but as I got to the area where I figured the turn to Hines St. would be, I saw a blue sign announcing a left turn for the winery. It's on Hines St. You go a few blocks West and immediately after crossing the railroad tracks, it's on the left.
Once inside, I looked around a little. They've got lots of stuff for sale besides their wines. I didn't spend too much time looking because I really can't be spending money on stuff I don't really need, so I soon sought out the clerk and asked for a half dozen bottles of the blackberry mead.
Of course, Ash, one of those bottles is for you. -

I'm grateful and feel like you've helped me erase some bad kharma ~

Re: New Site Questions - Honeywood Mead
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 9:16 PMI live probably about 6-7 blocks (up the hill) away from honeywood so I get so spoiled on their wine :)
They told me once that they always know when there is some sort of medieval themed event coming up because they sell out of all their meads!
Glad you had an easy time finding it. I forgot they had a sign out on misson st. Dont tell me today was the last day of the faire. I haven't had time to get out there and look. -

Re: New Site Questions - Honeywood Mead
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 9:43 PMCanterbury Ren Faire is still happening on Sunday 10 to 6. I'd suggest going early because it's going to be even hotter than today.
If I lived that close to some place like Honeywood, I'd spend a lot of time kicking myself because I can only even semi-justify buying good wine on very special occasions. Faerieworlds is a very special occasion. -
-
Re: New Site Questions - Honeywood Mead
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 10:02 PMI might just make it there! You have a link for them?
Oh don't get me wrong I'm not down there everyday. But it is nice when special occasions pop up. Its one of the few things that makes Salem a tolerable place to live. -

Re: New Site Questions - Honeywood Mead
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 10:14 PMHere's a link for the Canterbury Ren Faire: www.canterburyfaire.com/
It's a new faire, so it's on the small side. It's pretty easy to find. Take Hazelgreen Road east from I-5 exit 260 for several miles until you get to Mt. Angel Highway, turn left on that, and it's only a couple of hundred yards up the road. 99E/Portland Rd. crosses Hazelgreen about a mile to the east of I-5. Performers include Alexander James Adams, Zinger the Magick and Tobias the Adequate and a small group of knights on horseback.

Re: New Site Questions
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 10:29 PMOh, getting back to Steve's original question about camping: The camping areas are being laid out in 20 x 20 foot squares (well, approximately squares and approximately 20 x 20). Each "pod" can have up to 12 people in it. With that arrangement, there's probably plenty of wiggle room to accommodate a tent that's a bit larger, so I'd say the 10 x 13 tent would be OK. I'd suggest arriving early on Friday to be among the first in line.
Before I volunteered in order to be able to camp Thursday night, I was planning on being in line by 9 a.m. Friday for admission to the camping area. That's probably ridiculously early, but I tend to do that. I've often been among the first in line when I've attended FW. Last year on Saturday, people thought I was "official" because I was first in line at the gate and was sitting in my camp chair. I did answer some questions, but I also let people know I was just another attendee who just happened to be first in line.
If I recall correctly from Wednesday evening's work party, there will be 120 pods in the party area in the large field to the NW of the stage & vendor field, and 60 pods in the quiet area to the North of the main parking. That would mean a maximum of 1,440 people in the party area and 720 in the quiet area. Of course, not every pod will have 12 people since there are many single people (like me) and couples without kids, so some pods might only have 4-6 people.
Offhand, I'd say showing up early on Friday for camping is a good strategy. Bring books, instruments, etc., get to know others waiting, get pictures of other folks in costume, whatever it takes to pass the time until camping opens up. -

Sat, July 25, 2009 - 6:25 PMWhat about swimming in the river? -

Re: New Site Questions
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 7:13 PMI was just reading that in the Vendor FAQ. No swimming in the river onsite because there will be no lifegaurds. Liabality reasons im sure.
However there is the public swimming hole just offside I think that people can go to. -

1) The main Lake/pond (at pisgah) on the site is not swimable, but there is a place to swim nearby, but you have to drive there?
2) There is also another different place where you can swim/sunbathe in the nude?
Any idea about the breakfast details?
